It's often the case that the most interesting and memorable moments happen 'just by chance', or maybe by divine intervention........ ? In the shadow of Winchester Cathedral you'll find Dean Garnier's garden, created in the 1990s to commerate Thomas Garnier, Dean of Winchester (1840-1872) and a founder member of the Hampshire Horticultural Society. It's open to the public and provides a tranquil place for rest and reflection.....
The garden stands on the site of the monks' dormitory that was once part of the medieval Priory of St Swithun. It's 'hidden' behind a beautiful wooden door in the Inner Close (look for the sign post to find it). The garden consists of the Dorter Garden, with a beautiful meddar tree, herbs and white border;
The Presbytery Garden, with roses and clematis growing over arches and the cathedral's south transept as it's dramatic background; and finally the Lady Chapel Garden, hidden behind a yew hedge and filled with flowers and foliage which give a restful air, just right for contemplating the natural wonders around us. All in all, a little oasis of peace and calm, away from the bustle and toil of more earthly desires.
