When we think of colour in the garden, we immediately thing of the plants, flowers, foliage and berries..... but what about our tastes for those garden paint shades? How many of us have the courage to dash a bit of colour into our garden at the flick of a paintbrush? And why do some colours work and others not....?
This ponderance was ignited whilst on a recent walk past a rather strikingly painted aqua coloured fence. Now, don't get me wrong, everyone has their own perception of good taste, but some colours do seem to strike a discord whilst others, despite being vibrant, seem to work incredibly well. I remember well myself painting a whole run of ornate trellis in Beaumont Blue, still available from Cuprinol but would I do it now? No, probably not. Just as trends in interiors come and go, so too do exterior paint trends. Nowadays I might opt for a tone of grey or maybe, as I recently did, Muted Clay (also Cuprinol). But do not dismiss those louder shades. A prime example of which are these pair of standard metal benches painted a vibrant red. Somehow it works. But then when we look at nature, it too shows us red and green in abundance just as it does green and yellow. Maybe the answer is to be selective. Pick a focal element and go for it.... Is there an easier way to show your personality than a pot of paint and a bit of elbow grease?
